The Maha Kumbh Mela in India is set to witness an unprecedented gathering of 400 million devotees over six weeks, making it one of the largest religious congregations in the world. However, the festival began on a tragic note with fatalities reported due to a pre-dawn crush of people. To manage the massive crowds, authorities have constructed a temporary city spanning 10,000 acres, featuring 150,000 tents and extensive sanitation facilities. The pathways are illuminated with LED and solar lights, while 15,000 workers ensure cleanliness. Advanced surveillance measures, including CCTV cameras, drones, and underwater drones, help maintain security, alongside temporary police stations and floating water police units. Lost-and-found centers, aided by AI facial recognition, assist in reuniting separated families. Over 50,000 personnel, including bomb squads, patrol the festival grounds, with fire safety being a top priority—every tent is equipped with fire safety gear, and $15 million has been allocated to fire prevention. Additionally, 351 firefighting vehicles and 2,000 trained personnel remain on standby to handle emergencies, ensuring a safer experience for the millions of pilgrims.
